Compact MiniMAX™ UV Lamp Ideal for Laboratory Studies

The Spectroline® MiniMAX™ UV-5G is the perfect compact lamp for a variety of laboratory applications, including UV sanitizing of disease-causing microorganisms and UV degradation studies.

The UV-5G model is a battery-operated, 5-watt, short-wave (254nm) UV lamp. It combines mini size with maximum power, making the lamp extremely portable and highly effective.

The UV-5G lamp weighs only 11 oz (312g) and measures just 9 x 2¼ x 1¼ in (22.9 x 5.7 x 3.2 cm). It comes with a wrist strap to reduce hand fatigue and can be easily slipped into a pocket for convenient transport. The lamp is powered by four 1.5-volt AA alkaline batteries (not included), which provide 4 to 6 hours of use. An AC adapter and nylon travel pouch are also included.

The CM-10MP is an “all-in-one tool” for the laboratory technician…a compact, portable, cost-effective darkroom that allows for epi-illumination and transillumination.

Weighing only 4 lbs. (1.8 kg), it can be conveniently carried from place to place. With dimensions of 8.75W x 10L x 4.5”H (22.2W x 25.4L x 11.4 cm H), this space-saving unit can fit easily in cramped areas.

Spectronics Corporation manufactures a full line of cabinets that provide different working sample sizes, options for UV lamps, and can accommodate a wide variety of applications.
 
Spectroline® CL-150 Series UV workstations enable lab technicians to view, analyze and photograph fluorescent samples with both epi-illumination and trans-illumination light sources. A removable bottom panel allows either unit to be placed directly over the transilluminator. The 25-watt white light bulb in the cabinet provides visible illumination for easy sample preparation.
 
The spacious CL-150 cabinet is able to accommodate large electrophoresis gels and up to four 8 x 8” (20 x 20cm) TLC plates. It can be used with any one or two of 11 different models of Spectroline® X- and XX-series 15-watt UV lamps (separately available). The CL-151 is identical to the CL-150, but is equipped with the XX-15NF lamp, which has separate 15-watt long-wave (365nm) and short-wave (254nm) UV tubes.
 
Felt curtains allow easy access to the cabinet interior while blocking out external light. The housing dimensions are 17.5W x 20.25L x 9.75”H (44.5 x 51.4 x 24.8cm). Both cabinets are made out of rugged aluminum with a chemical-resistant polyurethene coating.

 

 

High-Intensity UV Viewing Cabinet Assures Peak Efficiency

One such product is Spectroline® CX-20 high-intensity UV viewing cabinet. Designed for peak efficiency, it guarantees maximum ultraviolet irradiance and fluorescent contrast.
 
The CX-20 cabinet combines separate long-wave and short-wave 8-watt UV light sources with uniquely designed specular aluminum reflectors to assure maximum intensity and exceptional fluorescent contrast. An internal 25-watt white light bulb provides visible illumination.
 
The large UV viewing darkroom can be used with larger samples. It has a removable bottom panel, which can be easily placed over 20 x 20 gels and TLC plates, or to provide greater illumination, over a Spectroline UV transilluminator. The cabinet’s housing is made of vinyl-clad aluminum for maximum durability and a flexible, contoured viewing eyepiece with a UV-absorbing window for comfort and safety. The window also eliminates “blue haze” interference and increases contrast between the fluorescent area and the background.
 
Loading and unloading plates and gels is simple. Soft rubber curtains on both sides of the CX-20 allow easy entrance to its interior. Both the curtains and the door shield from external light. Users select UV wavelengths by pushing a button. All power buttons are conveniently color-coded to protect samples from unwanted light exposure.

“Two-in-One” Transilluminators Provide Both Ultraviolet and White Light Illumination

Spectronics Corporation manufactures state-of-the-art transilluminators built to exacting standards used for visualization of target DNAs and proteins. They work by emitting high levels of UV radiation through the viewing surface.
 
The advanced Spectroline® Bi-O-Vision Series transilluminators feature two workstations, producing both 312nm ultraviolet and white light. The TD-1000R model offers fixed-intensity while the TVD-1000R model offers variable-intensity control of either UV or white light. These units are continuously adjustable from 100% down to 50%. This enables researchers to select medium wavelength ultraviolet or white light illumination to view fluorescent gels or visible blots.
 
The UV-B (312nm) intensity of the TVD-1000R can be varied. This flexibility in irradiance control helps ensure the longest sample preparation time, while minimizing actual UV damage to the sample.
 
The Bi-O-Vision has two adjacent workstations, each with a filter area of 8 x 8" (20 x 20 cm). The UV side is lit by five 8-watt UV-B tubes and delivers nanogram sensitivity for detecting ethidium bromide-stained DNA or RNA. The white light side has three 8-watt fluorescent tubes that ensure excellent illumination for viewing Coomassie blue-stained protein gels, methylene blue-stained DNA gels and autoradiograms.

 

 

 

Low-Cost UV Crosslinker Speeds Up DNA Research

The crosslinking process utilizes short wave (254 nm) UV light to covalently bond nucleic acids to either nitrocellulose or nylon membranes. Spectronics Corporation manufactures advanced, versatile and accurate crosslinkers to avoid the loss of nucleic acids during the hybridization process, a consistent, irritating problem for lab technicians. The Select™ XLE-Series is a high quality, inexpensive ultraviolet crosslinker that addresses this issue. It covalently binds nucleic acids to membranes in under 30 seconds — 240 times faster than vacuum-oven baking.

 

The unit is able to identify and analyze trace amounts of DNA/RNA with far greater sensitivity, accuracy and speed than with conventional analysis. Lab technicians will also appreciate the exceptional accuracy and precision irradiation, even compensating for aging UV tubes when output diminishes over time.

 

Researchers rely on this unit for eliminating PCR contamination, nicking ethidium-bromide-stained DNA in agarose gels, gene mapping for creating cleavage-inhibiting thymine dimers, RecA mutation screening in E.coli, UV sterilization and miscellaneous UV-dosage applications.

Spectronics Corporation’s Slimline™ Series UV transilluminators are equipped with a filter glass that measures just 4.3” x 5.5” (11 x 14 cm), making them ideal for working with mini gels and samples. The cost effective transilluminators feature a slim profile that utilizes just four 8-watt UV tubes, minimizing UV exposure to the lab technician.

An exclusive LONGLIFE™ UV filter glass inhibits solarization up to 50 times longer than traditional UV filters, extending filter life dramatically and providing longer usage. A unique diffusing screen ensures superior light distribution and eliminates confusing light striations caused by the contours of the tubes. The UV-transmitting filter allows manipulation of gels directly on the transilluminator and shields the filter glass from cuts, scratches and breakage.

Jon Cooper, President of Spectronics Corporation had the honor of attending a White House briefing on international trade policy in Washington, DC. yesterday afternoon. He spent several hours meeting with numerous administration officials, including the Secretary of Commerce, the Director of the White House's National Economic Council, the Under Secretary for Economic Affairs in the U.S. Department of Commerce, and the Deputy Administrator of the Small Business Administration.

These officials provided detailed information about a broad range of programs and services that are now available to assist small and medium size businesses. The goal of the federal government is to provide export assistance in order to help grow sales in overseas markets. Now, Researchers Can Tailor Make Their Own UV Viewing Systems

CC-81 UV Viewing Cabinet for Lab

The Spectroline® CC-80 and CC-81 ultraviolet viewing systems provide unequaled fluorescence analysis of research findings. The CC-80 and CC-81 are ideal for use in chromatography, electrophoresis, genetic research, photoresist coating inspection, forensic science and much more.

Researchers can custom design their own fluorescence analysis systems by choosing from a wide range of Spectroline UV lamps that are available in 254, 312 and 365 nm wavelengths. For even higher UV intensity and greater fluorescent contrast, users can select from 29 Spectroline UV transilluminators. Spectronics Corporation has announced the promotion of Debra Hammond to Global Customer Service Manager.

Debbie started her career at Spectronics more than 20 years ago as an International Customer Service Specialist, eventually moving on to Department Manager in 1998. Her positive, “can-do” attitude and outstanding work ethic made her a perfect choice for the Global Customer Service Manager position.

In her new role, Debbie will be responsible for streamlining the daily work flow of both the International and Domestic customer service departments, which in the future will be referred to as the Global Customer Service Department. “My primary focus will be to continue to maintain, nurture and strengthen the customer relationships our sales team creates worldwide. These relationships are critical, since our customers will continually come back to us when their needs are satisfactorily addressed,” says Debbie.
