Discover Flaws and Defects in Gems and Minerals with Multi-Functional UV Lamp
Spectronics Corporation has introduced the MiniMAX™ UV-4NFW, a battery-operated, 4-watt, multi-functional, long-wave/short-wave ultraviolet lamp that is ideal for gem and mineral inspection. Under UV fluorescence, gemologists can separate artificial stones from the authentic, or determine if a gemstone has been heat-treated. Fluorescence is also commonly used to categorize gem and mineral specimens, their place of origin and their composition.
A lamp that emits both long-wave UV (365 nm) and short-wave UV (254 nm) is preferred as many minerals react exclusively to long-wave, others to short-wave only, and still others that react to both long-wave and short-wave UV. Some minerals will even glow different colors under each of the UV wavelengths. The UV-4NFW lamp also features a built-in white light flashlight for general inspection.
The MiniMAX™ UV-4NFW weighs just 12 oz (340g) with batteries. It is extremely compact, measuring only 9 x 2¼ x 1¼” (22.9 x 5.7 x 3.2 cm). Scientists and hobbyists will find this cordless unit easy to carry around in the field to view gems and minerals in their natural environment.
Powered by four 1.5-volt AA alkaline batteries (not included), the UV lamp provides 4 to 6 hours of continuous use. A slide-out compartment makes battery replacement quick and easy. The lamp comes with an AC adapter, nylon carrying strap and nylon travel pouch
